Part of my daily Internet travels brings me to the Kitchn for really useful content in and around all things food-related. A recent post included a Food-Lover’s Guide to Manhattan and I’m really looking forward to some of the locations mentioned within the guide the next time I’m in Manhattan. Can’t wait!

Gardening Can Grow Lifespan
July 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Found an interesting article that confirms something that gardeners have known for centuries, but modern science has confirmed — Gardening is good for you! The simple idea of being outside working the dirt of one’s plot of land or even a container garden is quite peaceful and a low impact form of exercise for those who are not very aggressive when caring for their garden areas. For those of us who can be aggressive in the art of garden maintenance, the workout can be quite intense.
As with so much I mention within my blog, simple living can pay dividends and for those inclined to engage in such activities as gardening, adding years to your life is a nice benefit and one that even the most spartan of gardens can be of benefit to human beings across the land.
Funny, but practical product…

I probably do not have to mention again how much I loathe kitchen gadgets. This post contains the mention of a unique product I can actually appreciate since it has a very practical use in one’s kitchen/cooking environment. That product is named Spongioli and I literally laughed out loud upon seeing this.
The ravioli-style sponges design was created by Liz Goulet Dubois, Fred Studio. These sponges are “super absorbent, strong and long-lasting, anti-bacterial, static-free, low in carbs, and pretty darn irresistible. Six compressed sponges in each clear recyclable PET package.”
I guess this not really considered a gadget per se, but it is pretty unique and I did appreciate it and thought I’d mention it.

Technology + Food = More and more Questions

I recently came across this link from the U.S. Food Policy blog. It shows 10 Google maps that illustrate various ways land is used. Pretty interesting in the commentary, as well.

Silly Kitchen Gadget
July 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I give up! I have officially seen it all! I am NOT a kitchen gadget person. As I grow older, I have learned that simplicity and lack of clutter can work miracles in the kitchen in terms of just killing some of the overhead that can reside in the most important room of a living area. An added benefit to scaling down to a more minimalist approach in the kitchen is improvement of technique and a focus on efficiency or a host of other reasons….you get the point.
Back to the star of this post – the Spaghetti Measure. Come on! Even for the “portion-challenged” of the world, this contraption just really made me laugh. Cooking is about trial and error. Guessing on portions is part of the challenge. You can adjust; no one gets hurt. Really. Does this silly gadget adjust for thinner cuts of pasta (like capellini)? Either way, be strong and do not think this gadget will make your life in the kitchen easier when you cook pasta. Have fun when you cook. Don’t overthink.

Bodum Bistro Toaster
July 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment
A toaster may not be the most interesting item in the kitchen, but it tends to be the most used small appliance…at least in my kitchen. The idea of keeping a toaster for 10-15yrs (or more) is probably not a stretch either. Why not go with a toaster that’s pleasing to the eye and does the job that it was intended to do? Enter the Bodum Bistro Toaster. I really like the play on form & function. This appliance would fit within any decor and has a small enough footprint to possibly leave on the counter top of a small surface area.
